First and Second Banks of the United States (federal reserves) operated until 1836. It was originally stopped by Andrew Jackson (called them a den of vipers) who then printed our own money in green, or greenbacks. When it was reinstated by President Woodrow Wilson they kept the same colored currency to ease the transition. Wilson said it was the worst thing any president had done to the nation in his exit address.
