I think you could say the same thing about most trade work. Right now theres a wide spread belief in the US that a 4 year degree is the only avenue to a rewarding career. It's hugely misleading! When people say they need free or subsidised education, maybe what they really need is to be told that people who use their hands for a living are in no way inferior to white collar people. Give it 10 years and joining the trades will be all the rage!
Reminds me of the joke about this mother talking about her 3 children. " My daughter has a Ph D in Egyptology, my one son has a degree in modern art; thank goodness my youngest son is a plumber, otherwise we'd all starve."
