I believe all imperial units have been defined in metric ones for a long time. When calibrating American instruments, they refer to the kilogram in Paris, not to any specific "Standard Pound" stored in a Washington vault.
Yes, in America. Because it's the only country that matters in my statement, because I couldn't care less about countries I'm not in. You should get used to that now, being whiny about it won't change it.
