Your sheet music was good, but those musicians had hours or even no time at all to practice it. Sight reading a piece like that... Even though I don't play an instrument, I can imagine their pain.
You guys don't realize how hard it is to sight read fast or complicated music. Even though you can play the notes without thinking about how to play it, your brain has to process every one and tell ur body to play the corresponding note, and if there's even 6 unique notes a second... well. That's not even taking into account accidentals, which are modifiers that tell you to play notes a half steps up or down, and the fact that you don't have any of the music down to muscle memory... well.
However, overtures are usually a trailer for the rest of the opera, so it was not so much "writing" as compiling other bits that the musicians were already familiar with.
