In places where you wipe with a hand you generally are supposed to eat with the other hand (although in some you use the other hand as a bowl....) but realistically if you wash your hands, a hand that has been up your bottom is effectively no less clean than any other hand once sanitized.
Yeah, people 'never' eat with their left hand (the hand they wipe with). Also the 'soup' should all be absorbed into the rice tbh. I'm not really a fan of eating with my hands (except for some things).
I might be wrong but I would assume he was referring to eating with your hand from a communal bowl set on the table instead of dishing it out to the individual. Unless it's something large and easily singled out without touching the others on the plate most Americans will use a utensil to serve food to the individual.
