By that logic wouldn't the brake also be the accelerator since it accelerates you backwards?

The brake would be a decelerator, as in slowing down the vehicle, and eventually coming to a full stop, backwards acceleration implies change of direction
Change of direction isn't nessesary to meet the definition of acceleration (and thus accelerator) tho, just being able to produce a change in velocity is all you need to meet the requirement.
And if your going to say that accelerator and decelerator are based off whether or not they accelerate you forwards or backwards both accelerators can accelerate you forwards or backwards, both the brake and gas pedal
