Pretty much. He’s saying he’s afraid of a leftist state where the government decides how to allocate resources, who has “too much” and redistribute them, he’s afraid of laws that restrict or ban personal choices that are unhealthy for an individual or the planet- regulation. The boogie man of the right leaning mind- “the nanny state” where everyone gets a sandwich but they don’t get to choose it, no one is trusted with metal scissors, you get plastic ones with a curved tip. That is the fear that drives so many people, the self motivated and self centered view point that people like the current president appeal to.
Of course I don’t support the “nanny state.” A communist nightmare where men aren’t free to think or live, where someone else decides what is “the way” and you follow or are a criminal. A place where if any blade of grass grows faster or taller than the others it is cut down so that all can feel equal. BUT- the more extreme right wing scenarios are equally chilling. Fascism is fascism, totalitarian idealisms are what they are regardless of their politics. Sadly, for so many people it isn’t actually that they value “freedom” or anything else- it’s that they are fine with such extremes as long as the ideology that polices the land is their own ideology, and one that allows them to flourish and more or less keep their lifestyle as they would want it. It isn’t about right or wrong to most of these people regardless of their party and politics- it’s about getting what they want, no matter how high the ideals they cloak that in are.
Extremists on the left can recognize and point out right extremism, see it for the ignorant, ridiculous, horror that it is; and extremists on the right can do that with the left. Yet somehow, neither can recognize the absurdity and flaws of their own extremism. It’s a cautionary tale. Extremist views are the identifying feature of a mind that is out of touch with reality, a decision making process led by bias and imagined scenarios. The extremist, once having identified themselves as such, should be given the same credibility and attention as the schizophrenic yelling at the dumpster to free Abraham Lincoln from the lizard people. They need help, not an audience. Both are not aligned to reality, and most certainly should not be placed in charge of reality.
