It's why advice from successful people isn't always the best - the nasty truth about some fields/situations is that only a fraction of people can make it, but to those who *have* made it, success seems like a natural result of hard work, because they don't have a good gauge of how many external factors had to go into it. Term's most commonly used in financial circles, but has applications in multiple fields.

Well, by this point, he actually has some relevant experience. Isn't he excluded by the "born in the US" thing, though? Although if any of the quotes in this thing are accurate... hell, sign me up, he was better than Trump is one sentence in.

They are supposed to figure it out by splitting one of the numbers into two parts (for instance, splitting the "8" into "5+3") in such a way that one of the components combines with the other number to make 10. This is, essentially, teaching the associative property of addition without ACTUALLY bothering to teach what the associative property is, which is stupid.

It's in James chapter 3, I think. Something about a tongue being to a person as a rudder is to a ship.

Rainy day, little Terry Pratchett, episode or two of Midsomer Murders, some chicken soup, and some opaque clothes for going out and dancing around in the rain briefly before I get bored and go shower.

Yeah, but the bad news is, if they confiscate it as evidence, and you're *not* guilty? They don't have to give it back.

Uhhhh.... A) I grew up in the South and three of my cousins have been shot. Pretty sure the South ain't innocent. B) You want people to "understand the value of life," they're gonna need a life worth living first. I have danced with despair a lot, and let me tell you, unless you are HARD trained to assume others have more value than you, no one looks like they're worth much.
Girls and guys 13 comments

Bingo. Girls are raised to think through the *implications* of what they said - i.e., if I say something, and five logical steps down the line it insults my aunt, my mom's gonna tan my backside. And then guys get pissed at us for thinking through what *they* say and getting mad at the implied insult to a friend, or just our intelligence. God knows my mate got mad at me for insisting he thought through what he said in the first two years of our marriage, but he's gotta admit, he stopped getting blackballed for promotions after that...

He's not talking about people not caring about male suicides, so much as people not caring that there are specifically more male suicides than female suicides - i.e., he doesn't care about suicide, he's just finding a way to make it about gender.

Slang is how language evolves. "Puke" wasn't a real word until somebody made it up.
