It was also meant to protect ourselves from our own government should they get out of hand, which they have. That's why each state is supposed to have its own civilian militia.
No, actually it was meant to protect us as a nation from other nations because when the constitution was written, the united states didn't have a standing army. The 2nd amendment made it so that way if we were ever invaded by a foreign nation, there would be some form of a military (in this case "a well-regulated militia") to protect us.
Right, you have an AR15 you bought at Wal-Mart and the government has drones and nuclear weapons. Whenever there is an armed standoff between right-wing militias and the government, how does that work out? Ruby Ridge, Waco? Good luck with that plan.
ugh this is why I hate you gun control people. You make the most batshit crazy arguments just because you want to push your anti-gun agenda on us. My family has a gun. We use it to protect ourselves from bad people who also have guns. If gun laws take our gun away we have two options. Let ourselves be killed by a criminal who has a gun, or become criminals ourselves and own a gun illegally. It's not only that either. Some people have wild animals and shit where they live. You expect them to fight of a bear with a damn knife??? Good luck to them. We don't need gun control. It will only cause more death and more suffering for innocent people that only want to protect themselves. TL:DR gun control will only cause more problems
The point isn't to defeat the US government in a full out war, it's about preventing a police-state. You can't put an F-18 or an ICBM on a street corner to stifle decent, you need an officer, and an officer can be killed by a citizen with a gun. What would be the point of a government nuking it's own land anyway?
I there really anybody stupid enough that they think the Founding Fathers wanted the 2nd amendment to make sure that any group of disgruntled fringe nutcases could overthrow the new government?
yeah, one of the main reasons they revolted in the first place was because they thought taxes were unfair. I'm pretty sure there are worse things going on today than high taxes, which i might add are still a large issue several hundred years later.
