So there is specific areas you can go into and we havent been given them yet but im hoping for weapons. Mainly all the electronics systems of the ship, fire suppression systems, radar, sonar, displays, weapons, countermeasures. Im planning on sticking with it for the long run not just doing minimum period. I'll be an electronics technician
Weapons is a solid area that can really help you if/when your contract is up. I knew a guy who made a career off of it- back when they were first switching to electronic control systems in the US fleet- he learned a ton about networks, switches, cable management. Went back to civilian life and had skills that not too many folks had. Did work for military contractors and moved up into large scale project management with telecoms when they started going digital- then used the experience with the two fields to do work with satellite communications. He has some sad stories about it- but mostly it was good to him. Best of luck. If you can’t get weapons- Radar and sonar aren’t things every schmuck knows either.
It's different, got sick of living in the country in middle of nowhere so decided to join, chose Navy because it will be the most travel as well as some family members are/were in kt
