I think it may be cultural. I remember watching american movies with my mom and sis and we we're really surprised (and a bit uneasy) by the fact they had pictures of the people living in the house, on the walls of said house. In my home, we have pics of people we wish were there in the "common rooms" and tiny pics of the others in one tiny place in our own rooms.
Anyways now I've gotten used to it so if I enter your living room and there are pics of your kids I will find it cute. But it's not weird either not to have them!

The UK one took me a lot of adjustment because I didn't know what it was at first and I just thought it was a bad documentary, then after 1.5 episodes I got suspicious, looked it up, saw it was a comedy and gave it a go but to be honest if I had had something else to watch...
However after some time it was okay and even enjoyable. Just weirdly british.
