Because the US uses a decentralised law enforcement system every department is different. Yes they follow and enforce the law but each departemnt can set its own protocols, training, and recruiting. Unlike in the UK, Norway, and many other countries all have centralized systems which allows to adopt policies like in the OP nationwide.

There are also species of croc that are significantly larger than your largest alligator. Gators where i live can get up to 13ft. And thats huge here. But i have heard of saltwater and nile crocs reaching 20ft ON AVERAGE.

Not a whole lot but alligators have a bigger and wider snout and theres a particular thing about tooth arrangment but the only real difference is geography. We have gators in the states they have crocs every where else.
