Single tap instead of multiple taps to say "hey". Also, clear signal instead of a thing that's awkward to try to phrase (it can be hard to put "I want attention" into conversational words). Also, the effort and time investment is part of the gift. Many homemade gifts would be easier to buy at a store but general society places more value on the homemade one because it took more time and effort from the gift giver.
I’m going a different route. I’m going to say in response to first guest- when asked “why did he make things more difficult than they need to be?” The answer is in the original post. He’s a programmer, it’s not just a job, it’s a way of life. But- it’s a cute, sweet, unique (in the sense there’s only one that he made) gift, and when you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. If you ask a programmer for a hammer, they’ll design you a program to help you plan and optimize how to drive your nails. It’s the way of things, a carpenter would build her something from wood, an MBA would buy her something nice, and a salesman would forget her birthday. We use the talents we have.
