I should be more specific. When we in small communities have a child expelled for anything like this that is unfair, and ridiculous, then we should protest it in some way. Parents could withhold children until the school does something, blow up the school district's phones...SOMETHING.
I saw one last fall that a child took a utility knife from another child that was going to cut somebody and gave it to s teacher. As part of the zero tolerance policy the intervening student was suspended for temporarily possessing a knife at school. This shot is out of control.
Their school's no tolerance policy is to suspend any and all students engaged in a physical altercation. Since the one kid physically fought the other kid to get control of the gun, they suspended him. The school district refused to make an exception for the special circumstances, as I remember, due to the student putting himself in a dangerous situation. They expected him to allow for school staff to handle it, no matter how long it would take for staff to intervene. I think his family fought it or sued, stating that the kid with the gun had cocked and pointed with intent to shoot the teammate. The hero kid reasonably decided that waiting for staff to intervene would have resulted in the teammates injury or death. I think they won actually.
