Yu don't realize he couldn't escape the suite because their was no power, he couldn't move if he tried. Besides the parachute would have needed some energy source to ignite the mechanism to make it function their was no energy. You should also realize the suite weighs hundreds of pounds the size of the parachute to slow his decent would have had to be huge.
