It seems I should have done some research. This definitely is more nuanced then it seems at first glance. I still think he was in the right though. Federal land isn't Federal land. It's the people's land. Governments are created by the citizenry to serve the citizens and are funded by them. They can't take your money and tell you something isn't yours. That makes them no longer public servants which, in my mind, makes them in control when they are not.
