Let me clarify, stud finders are not quite accurate since they just detect metal, studs are wood. Therefore what you think may be a stud behind the drywall might actually be a pre existing nail that may have been painted over. It's best to find an electrical outlet/light switch and measure from there seeing as how they are mounted on the sides of studs.
