I'm going to take a flying leap here. He's obviously a naval man of some kind. He and a crew were stranded, and he saw the crew eating something and they told him it was an albatross. he was suspicious but he ate the meat anyway. When he tried food made with an actual albatross, he realized from the taste that they lied and he'd eaten one of the crew. He couldn't live with it so he shot himself.

Okay for real I feel like you already knew the answer because that leap is very accurate. He was stranded, and starving, his wife died of starvation and the crew made her into a soup, he drank it under the impression it was albatross. He was rescued, and ordered the soup to prove to himself he hadn't eaten his wife, he had, he shot himself. You are correct! Ding ding ding! Congrats! :D

I wouldn't have guessed his wife, I just figured it was some random crew member. Honestly though, if I was starved, I could eat a dead person no problem, I don't get why people have a problem

If it is someone you love it would probably make you feel pretty sick, and if there was an agreement before I'm cool with being eaten for someones survival but I think most people would agree cannibalism is a bit twisted mate.
