Now I should say I haven't watched the third season yet so maybe something changes along that way

It took me a few time through the title of this post to figure out what it meant. Capitalization, people!

I was wondering who 'why' was until I realised.

I was literally begged to watch by my sister who thinks it's a profound drama but I can't help feeling like Hannah's suicide is made out to be a pretty act of revenge . I honestly don't think it encourages or romanticizes suicide I just feel like the tapes were unnecessary torture and some of them were unjustified. We're supposed to feel sorry for hannah but she comes off a bit manipulative at times.

I mean, I get what you're saying, but you're not meant to view suicide in a positive light to begin with

I haven't seen the third season either. I did see a lot of issues with the series, however, and I admit I found it decently hard to sympathize with Hannah on some things toward the end of season 1.

I think what people didn't get is that there are people that have committed suicide for just one of any of those reasons. Not to justify it, there are just some of us who break more easily and the story is telling us things to watch for

You're probably right, German. I think they try to carry that over in season 2 with the camera kid. Tbh I didn't dislike the series necessarily, just parts of it were oddly handled.
.
One of the big things that bothered me was Hannah's rape also. And to be clear, I'm not implying it's her fault, but I thought her choosing to go to the jock guy's house (it's been awhile, idr names) was bizarre. And, while I understood her frustration when she went to her teacher, I thought her BLAMING him for not somehow handling it was unreasonable. She didn't want to go to the police, but she didn't want him to get away with it and I'm not quite sure what she expected the teacher to do

Yeah, I'd need to give it another pass before I could give a ruling on that one, just because I feel like if someone's gotten as far as going to someone you go to for help, they need you to pry a bit. I only say this because any time I have to start up with a new therapist, the first thing they say is "How are you?" And every time I respond "I'm fine, how are you?"

Just to clarify that was meant to be gelman*
.
From what I remember he DID try and ask her quite a few questions and lay some ground work. Not all of them were good questions, mind you, but iirc she didn't want to talk to a counselor, she didn't want to go to the police, she didn't want to be named. Again, I understand why she felt frustrated and trapped, but there was nothing he could really do in that situation other than possibly show slightly more compassion

I just feel like the tapes were somewhat unnecessary , seems like they were just pouring salt on the wound. The tapes seemed somewhat cruel to the recipients not only did they have to deal with the guilt over her death but now she's telling them from beyond the grave that it was all their fault. Some of the tapes were deserved, and some were cruel and petty.

@xvarnah Well I don't get Gelman, the irony is I'm so used to being called "The German," because apparently my lineage is fairly readable, that I didn't even question that lol
nicengelman · 5 years ago
@anjelica237 Yeah, you've got a point. I guess you just wouldn't have much of a story without them, but yeah, it does reek of "This is your fault, now here's why"
catfluff · 5 years ago
@xvarnah i think his name is nic engelman or Nic Angel-Man in what is presume to be German or Dutch or Flemish.
nicengelman · 5 years ago
@xvarnah @catfluff god I'm dense, I didn't even realize he was getting Gelman out of my own damn name lol
nicengelman · 5 years ago
And yeah, Engelman is a German-Jewish name for Angel Man

Hannah is an absolute bitch and... well... I hope that fictional bitch is happy with how she went out. Yeah, fucked up shit in life happens... but she goes fucking Carrie/Scarlet Witch on people who had no fucking clue what they did and never had a chance.

To the minimum-wage fast food worker who forgot to give me ketchup packets once, this is your tape

@nicengelman I was trying to make a small reference to the chat about your name and managed to briefly derail this one instead haha
