Not news cause it's old news but we could have been completely energy independent 50 years ago but Nixon shut down thorium reactors because they didn't produce weapons grade waste. Thorium reactors or molten salt reactors are thousands of times more efficient as uranium reactors and have virtually zero waste. They also cannot melt down or explode. No chance. But since they don't produce the plutonium-239 that we weaponize, we don't use them... Also thorium is easily 3x more abundant than uranium. Wars could have been prevented. The environment could be infinitely better. But we wanted nukes instead... (United States)

On that topic, it's really confusing the hell out of me why we haven't switched over to nuclear power. People point out Chernobyl, but that shit only happens when you are a complete and utterly unaware idiot. We have plenty of coal power plants. Coal. Fucking coal. What the fucking hell, are we stuck in the ye olde times, burning coal and paying for it to power our shit. Nuclear Reactors have no impact on the environment, besides water vapor. If we had nuclear energy it could power so many things while we look into stuff like wind energy, solar power and the like. But no, pay for coal in the truckloads instead of a safe nuclear power source.

Wind and solar are expensive to make, and produce not nearly enough power. Currently solar is only .4% of our power in the United States. I love the idea of it, really, but it's definitely NOT the solution to our energy crisis. Nuclear, however, is. It currently makes up 19% of the US' power, and with only 104 reactors. Plus, they are usanium reactors. Thorium reactors are thousands of times more efficient, and can use the waste from the current nuclear reactors as fuel. Plus, it is literally impossible for a molten salt reactor to melt down or explode. Going even further with the hazard talk, the tiny tiny amount of waste produced by thorium reactors is benign within 200-300 years.
