I need some help dealing with a teacher. In my applied physics class, we did a project in which we had to build a robot that could push other robots out of the ring. I got explicit permission not to include gears, and the only other requirement was that it had to move. I spent two months trying to incorporate gears, and it just wasn't happening. So I held up my end of the deal, which was to explain gears in my write up, but I check my grade and found out he gave me a C in the project. I wrote him an email last night, and he responded saying he never gave me permission to exclude gears, and that my robot didn't move well enough to justify. (It moved really quickly in circles, but we figured out later that was due to cross wiring)
My overall grade in the class is a B, which isn't bad, but as a freshman, I don't want to ruin my chance of a 4.0 GPA.

There's still a chance to make up the rest of the letter grade and get an a. Try your best to remind him of the chat and explain that (if he doesn't give) you must have misunderstood and would like some form of extra credit or a smaller project to show you can apply the concept of gears. Tell him your education is important to you, and you'd hate to lose your 4.0 over a small misunderstanding for ONE project. Also. 4.0 is a wonderful goal, but do keep in mind some classes will be so hard and there are those professors who don't give As. So don't get too discouraged if it doesn't work out. A 3.7 is wonderful by any standard.

Thank you a lot! I'll ask him about that tomorrow. :)

I'm confused you said explicit permission not to include gears but then said you spent two months trying to incorporate gears

He said I didn't need to use them after two months of trying sorry for the confusion

So why didn't you want to use gears?

Because they weren't working out with his build somehow

I asked chocolateisgood. I would like to know why not your explanation

I was just restating what they had already said. No need to get snippy

Wasn't trying to be snippy but what you said I gathered from what was already said

Ah. Sorry then, just the way you asked I guess, to me it seemed it had been over looked (was a long chat post). Again. Simply trying to be friendly. :)

I spent two months on the gears, and it didn't work with the design (like kayt68 said :) ) and we had a competition in class that was the due date, so I kinda gave up :/
