I didn't know about that, my husband hasn't signed up for it, or does it wait until there's need for a draft and then you sign up for it? Sorry for knowing so little about my own country, I was never really taught about how the draft works

Actually a lot of people either don't sign up or don't even know about it. I don't think it matters that much though, since we haven't use the draft in like 30 odd years and I doubt we will any time soon.

Im signed up
aeacus · 8 years ago
I had to sign up when I got my license
aeacus · 8 years ago
But I'm pretty sure first born sons are exempt
aeacus · 8 years ago
Now that I say that it seems silly and probably isn't right

From the ages of 18-35 adult males are, not required, strongly urged to sign up for the draft. If you should need to receive any sort of federal funding though you must be signed up for the draft (I.e. FAFSA). Also, I don't know anything about the first born child but as of current if you're the only son you can be exempt from the draft as its meant for you to carry on the family name.

Ahh yes that's what I recall now

I didnot know about FAFSA and having to be signed up for the draft. Well hell I think women should have to also then.
texasranger · 8 years ago
Nope im a first born son and i signed up.

But was it voluntary or required? I think they meant they're exempt from requirement
metalman · 8 years ago
Exactly what kayt68 said. You can still do it but the military gives you a way out as its meant to be your job to continue the family name.
aeacus · 8 years ago
Yeah. I'm exempt but still signed up
texasranger · 8 years ago
Well i signed up anyway if my little brother has to then im doing it too.

well I'm not 100% positive on the whole first born son thing, but I'm pretty positive that if there are multiple sons/brothers in one family, not all of them can be drafted or currently serving at one time. My great grandfather wasn't allowed to serve because he already had like 2 or 3 brothers serving. At least that's what my dad told me. My dad said it has to do with leaving at least 1 or 2 children at home to take care of elderly parents if needed.

And basically to eliminate the chance of a set of parents losing all of their children at once in battle/war/combat
texasranger · 8 years ago
Which actually happened btw. In WW2 four brothers were all stationed on the same ship in the Pacific. The ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine killing all four brothers. This inspired saving private ryan and is even mentioned in the movie.

What is the rule for gay men and the draft? My husband is the only straight male of his siblings, but he's younger than his brother who didn't identify as a heterosexual male, does the first born thing take that into account?

i think 'dont ask, dont tell' applies
metalman · 8 years ago
Don't ask don't tell ended in 2011. Being openly homosexual in the military was a no no and could have gotten you expelled from the military. That being said openly gay and bisexual individuals serve in the military today. Although, it is still practiced that if someone comes out as a transvestite while in the military they can be disqualified from any military service.
