No prob! Labels are lame anyways. You do you and just be happy regardless :)

Yeah call them a prep when they go into Forever 21 or something. But I've sort of felt the same way because my taste in music has changed rather drastically lately. I've been listening to a lot more alternative rock and even some metal. But I've seen online with fandoms and people that identify as goth, scene, alternative, emo, etc. that they're not very accepting of new fans that come from a completely different place than they do, like a preppy girl that likes heavy metal. I saw a video on YouTube of a girl reviewing one of the albums I've been listening to and her channel is mostly fashion/style/makeup etc and then she has some reviews of heavier, alternative music and people in the comments just called her a poser, and a fake, and a scene wannabe and just all kinds of uncalled for names just because she is preppier but likes this kind of music. Like why are people so judgemental and exclusive about what type of music people listen to, where they shop and how they dress?

I, for one, get entirely excited to find someome who shares anything in common with me. Wtf is wrong with having tons of interests? And FYI to the judgies, those preppy make up girls can do hella lots with cosplay make up. Same with hair styling. I could care less if someone listens to metal but shops at abercrombie (so long as they've washed the smell out) and wears their makeup like a fairy in disguise. It's like people think if others join on their interests it will make them lose what makes them unique, but really it paves the way for a better experience and more friendships.

I know. But it seems like people are just so defensive about their interests like it only belongs to them and anyone else who seems different is not allowed to like the same things. That's what creates labels and I think it can almost scare people from going against the status quo because of fear of being ridiculed for being a little bit different.

I feel that those people are slowly slowly becoming less and less. Simply by looking at the fact that female gamers are finally being more accepted in the gaming community. Baby steps though, when we need giant ones, are hard to deal with. But you're right, the people who act like that are just thickening the labels. If it went on and on then each fandom would be too small to support itself and everyone loses something they cherished because they can't share.

My mom came up to me last week while I was doing the dishes (wearing my black Beatles tshirt, a big flannel and black pants) and she asked me: "So....... are you slowly becoming goth now?" I couldn't stop laughing and explained her the differences between goth and alternative or "grunge". She looked so confused.

Lol, seems like the tables turned. The parent said something to the child meant to be light and teasing and then received a long unexpected lecture on why what she said was wrong. Love it.

@kayt68 Your comment about how people shouldn't judge one another on how they dress or their interest and whatnot are the type of comments that make me wish chat had a thumbs up button.

katnisseverdeen - I wore black lipstick once, just once, and now I have the label as 'goth' and plus I just feel like black is a comforting color, and I can't really change that. For one, I am black, and two it just feels good.

I wish the comments did have like buttons too. There's so many I want to like. Thanks :)
katnisseverdeen_ · 8 years ago
@kayt68 - Listen, what you're saying is wrong... She actually thought I was becoming goth, which I'm not, and she doesn't know what the difference between all those styles are, so I explained it to her. Now don't you say "long unexpected lecture" Where did I say it was long? Where did I say it was a lecture? It was not a lecture, so stop being so shallow. Thank you.

X.x it was a joke, like to be funny? Other people seem to have gotten it, but I'm sorry if I offended you. It simply reminded me of when what I mentioned happened. Again, sorry, but my comment was meant to be light and fun, like you know, as in funsubstance. I in no way intended to be shallow and do I sincerely apologize.

Can't figure out how to edit comments on the chat section, so in addition I would like to add that in your story you mentioned you laughed, which, to me, portrayed the situation as a funny misunderstanding, not a serious mislabeling issue that would warn people to not joke about it. It long is relative. Your mom, or the impression I got from your story, was seeking a yes or no answer, and she received an explanation. I really feel bad thinking you misunderstood what I said, so sorry if this seems defensive. The last thing I want to do is offend anyone. I've only recently become active, and I'm trying to make friends with people and in doing so it seems I have offended some.

Yeah I didn't read that as you trying to be offensive to katniss either. I picked up on the same things in their comment that you did and came to the same conclusion. Also calling you shallow was kind of unnecessarily rude.

It's okay. I wasn't really having a great day and read your comment in a way that was a little offensive to me. Sorry kayt!

Its okay katniss :) I can actually see where it comes off that way if you aren't used to the person or just had a bad day
barcode · 8 years ago
Yeah bad days happen to the best of us :)

Yep. I was in the same sorta boat 10 years ago (no hot topic over here though) it's not just you. It's never just you. Happens to everyone who likes the same stuff as you.
