Pop is a genre of music that takes only popular or going to be popular sounds/samples/bpms to create the song.

my sister said they're the same, but i took a class that taught me that popular music is music since the industrial revolution that appeals to the middle class, so it can be pop, rock, jazz, country. anything that is POPULAR, whereas pop is just a genre, or style, of music.
