Ok, so I don't know what you've already read or what your age is, but as long as I'm alive I will NEVER EVER stop recommending Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings. On the third step of the podium there is Philip Pulmann with the trilogy "His Darks Materials", but he wrote many other amazing books. Then I'd say Artemis Fowl and Eragon. Miss Peregrine and Percy Jackson are on a little lower level, in my opinon, but they are definitely worth the read. A friend of mine whom I trust is fond of Shadowhunters: if you give it a try, will you let me know how it was? Well, let's not forget about Isaac Asimov ("The Gods Themselves" is brilliant) and Terry Pratchet (The Discworld saga). There is another series from a horror novelist, Clive Barker, which I liked a lot and it's called "The Books of Abarat". I've also read something of Marcus Heitz, The Dwarves: good, but not that thrilling.
I hope this helps you!

Eragon is also known as the Inheritance Cycle. The first book is under five hundred pages and the last one is over eight IIRC so make sure you have the time to read this
