I understand your point, but I still maintain that it depends on the circumstances. If my pet dies, for example, I don't want my husband telling jokes "until I smile again." I'd want support and empathy.

Most of these are great, but some would suck in reality. The nonstop jokes when you're feeling blue? Definitely depends on the circumstance because sometimes not having your valid feelings acknowledged is horrible. Sometimes we need to deal with a shitty situation and the associated shitty emotions, and our S.O. needs to respect that.
