Okay...I see what you're saying...Yeah...aaaaaaaaand you lost me. How did you make such a huge logic leap from "girls and guys have different social attitudes" to "the entire world insists that guys are fantastic and girls are worthless?"

That's actually somewhat of a goal for one of the book ideas I have. It's told in journal style, and there are hints to the reader that one of the characters has a crush on the protagonist but he doesn't notice. His story is something completely separate, but later I'd write another journal book, but from her perspective and with her story.

Am I the only one thinking "that'd make an awesomely horrifying mech boss in a video game"?

fun fact: WolframAlpha also supports beardseconds as a unit of measure. And unlike Google Converter, they get it right.

Double kick! 20 comments
guest · 9 years ago
Kicks can still be useful. For example, as a finisher. Punches are quicker and easier to aim, but kicks have longer range and more power. If you can land a couple good punches, you can daze or wind your assailant and knock them back into kick range, and then finish the fight with a kick while their reflexes are slowed. Also, for the average untrained person, there's a vast difference between seeing a kick coming and being able to counter one. You might think, "I can just grab their foot and flip them," but if you don't have the coordination to catch their foot, they'll just plow through your fingers and into your face. Or if you grab before their momentum is spent and they're stronger than you, it'll take you down as well as if you hadn't blocked.
I do agree, however, that when compared to punches, kicks are at a disadvantage when it comes to speed, telegraphing the move, and the user's balance. I just don't think that kicks are completely useless in a fight.

Marriage is more than just a piece of paper. That's kind of the thing that makes this a whole issue. People are arguing over whether marriage is either an institution developed by God for the joining of a man and a woman into a family unit, or a symbol that a particular person is more special to another particular person than anyone else in the world, or a mix of the two, or something in between, but they're all agreed that it's more than just a piece of paper that says "you two can't have sex with anyone else anymore." If it were only a piece of paper, no one would care that heterosexual couples get a "marriage" and homosexual couples get a "civil union" because the papers give the same things.

Only if
A) we get invited out specifically as a group date (eg: "Hey, do you and [other names here] want to go see a movie with me and [other names here] as a date?")
B) someone is sending VERY CLEAR SIGNALS that they like someone else in the group
C) one person (or group) insists on paying for everything (if money was involved, that is. There are some pretty fun dates that don't cost anything. So this doesn't really apply for something like, say, stargazing.)

Not bored. Fascinated! A couple days ago I learned all about Solomon's Key and different alphabets developed by different alchemists. Yesterday I learned that, back in 2009, we had technology to allow people to operate a computer and play a video game using only their mind.

Maybe It's Time To Be Prepared 21 comments

Well...Ebola DOES attack the brain as well as everything else, and usually takes out the parts of the brain responsible for self-identity and memory first, resulting in the victim becoming a virus-filled meatbag with motor skills that seeks out other warm bodies to spread the disease. And by that point, all internal organs have the characteristics of ones that have been dead for several days. So it's kind of like a zombie, in a way!

Maybe I'm just living under a rock, but I live in America and, while I've seen tons of stuff mocking hysterical Americans freaking out about Ebola, I have yet to see an actual hysterical American freaking out about Ebola. Seriously, are people really going nuts about this?

It's a supersaturated solution of sodium acetate, and a single solid crystal of sodium acetate on the end of the rod to act as a "seed" crystal (like a starting point)

Probably sodium acetate. Dissolve it in near-boiling water (to supersaturate the solution) until no more can be added, then let it cool back to room temperature. Poking it, shaking it, or otherwise disturbing it after that causes it to rapidly crystalize. Sodium acetate and water is the only solution I know that does that, but it could also be something else. There's probably source video with more information somewhere.
