they were collecting a bunch of them to see how climate has changed over time, and these creatures were great ways to tell that because of how old they usually are, so when they'd find one, they'd have to open it up to see its age (counting the rings like on a tree). sadly Ming was far too old to have taken the strain of being opened and died in the process. but the scientists had no way of knowing they'd kill it or how old it was, so can't really blame them too much.
