those are entry holes. Wtf do you expect, a 3 inch entry? Typical home defense calibers (to my non-researched understanding) would be 9mm, .38 special/.357 magnum, .40 s&w, .410 and .45 acp. most of those would leave fairly similarly sized entry holes
