Sounds, tastes, visions, or smells can be "etched" in the brain. There is no cure but there are treatments. PTSD should not ever go untreated. It can harm the sufferer and everyone they come in contact with.

I am a teacher who not only has a kid with ADHD but suffers from ADD myself. I had a parent that refused to treat my student and it completely turned our class upside down. That in turn interfered with the kids education. Every wasted class is taxpayers money. BUT the treatment is for the student to help THEIR academics. That is all the medicine is supposed to help with anything else is just an added bonus. Not giving kids the same opportunity to learn IS a form of abuse. Also, there are alternatives or added ways to treat it including biofeedback and cognitive education/ counseling.

PTSD was discovered due to survivors of the Vietnam war having maladjustment to returning to society. More recent combats have had a high rate. Survivors of domestic or child abuse, accidents and other traumas have now shown signs of it. It is usually treated as an anxiety-depression combo in meds combined with cognitive therapy.
