exactly. the words your ugly can be used in sequence as shown by the above example. "your ugly" literally means the ugly that belongs to you so it kind of works.

I also think you will end up being constantly disappointed with the men in your life if you expect them all to enjoy reading. . . .

So you don't like it because he doesn't enjoy the same hobby as you? Kind of shallow isn't it? Men usually need visual and physical stimulation to really enjoy something (such as films, porn, video games, sport etc), women do not derive as much pleasure from these stimuli, hence the preponderance of male artists, athletes, gamers. Obviously this is not a universal trait so don't fixate on that. Personally I also do not like reading fiction, I would much rather read non-fiction (if I have to read at all) such as scientific articles or the news. At least reading non-fiction develops my knowledge of the world around me and may enable me to help others in the future, rather than constantly escaping into the fictional world of books. Obviously everyone likes a good story, but this does not mean it has to be read. Stories can be watched, listened to, dreamt, imagined. Don't limit yourself by placing unwarranted value on books, look for stories everywhere.

How? He obviously has no idea what he is talking about, which surely makes it just as bad as homophobic ignorance.

Neither. Gays don't want pity, and most of all they don't want ignorance. The child doesn't really understand the situation, as indicated by his response. A better ending to the story would be that the parents corrected the child and explained the situation to him. No child wants to be lied to about the important stuff.

exactly. the child doesn't understand what it really means. So you can't say "Oh look how accepting and intelligent that child is, why can't adults be like that" because the child has no idea what they are really saying. If a parent was to explain that it actually meant fucking another guy in the ass then I'm sure the child would have a very different response. Also it is very likely that the child will feel differently when he grows up as he loses his innocence. Finally I'm sure the gay men would find the comment cute, but would be upset with the parents for not trying to explain the situation properly to the child.
