Why didn't they just use a felt-tip since it uses the capillary action to write and doesn't require gravity to work?

Actually there is oxygen within the sun. The nuclear fusion doesn't stop with helium (4-He), but goes further in its inner core (well, nitrogen and oxygen are the limit). However, you're right - it is not on fire.
