Terrible advice. They could be mad because you've done something bad, in which case you should apologize sincerely. They could be mad at someone else (from work, family etc.), in which case you should be understanding or just let them be.
Don't make light of other people's problems ever, be there for them and they may find a worthy spouse in you.
