I took this to mean that in the modern-day, instead of actually helping someone we give them uplifting comments on Facebook or other social media, not actually do anything concrete. I didn't take this to be about Religion or God sending someone.

It's too bad that "super popular" is shorthand for shallow, seeking popularity above all else, etc. Maybe she's popular because she treats others with respect and kindness, and recognizes that the boy will do the same (and also appreciates that).
