When the oppressed generalize their oppressors, it helps them stay safe and alive. When oppressors generalize the oppressed it can lead to violence and hate.
Basically, when an oppressed group, in this instance a racial minority, runs on the idea that it is very likely that a white person they encounter is racist, that caution may very well protect them, even keep them alive or unharmed until that person can determine their situation. However when the privileged majority assumes stereotypes about minorities it perpetuates the cycle of oppression because the privilege of that majority is essential in that cycle. When it hurts your feelings to be called you racist, 1) consider that maybe you do in fact inadvertently perpetuate racist behavior, and 2) consider that in their experiences with systematic racism, it may be that a non-prejudiced or non-racist person is the exception, not the rule...
