I think It was supposed to be a "prank". You know, when the friend will find out they will look at his reaction and laugh. That is what is called a "prank". People do pranks all the time, and the purpouse of them is just to laugh at the victim, they have no practical use. They're very common among groups of friends (Friends=people who like each other and spend time togheter).
