It's all about Thresholds. A strong threshold surrounds a good home and acts as a magical barrier to ward off supernatural beings. Their house was a mess, and they weren't the happiest lot unless at work. They treated it more like a barracks to eat and sleep in. They hardly lived there, therefore - sucky threshold.
