She's not a princess. In fact she is the only one of the Disney Princesses to not be a princess at all- neither by birth or by marriage.
Mulan's father is redrafted into the army because the Huns invaded China, but he is injured from a previous war. She steals his armor and pretends to be a man and joins the army in his place (the draft just requires one from each family). She trains with her regiment and goes off to war, where she is discovered to be a woman and abandoned (there is some technicality with her being sentenced to death for it...) Blah blah blah- more things happen, action scene at the palace.
It's a fabulous movie if you like Disney movies, and great songs.
