I think it’s learned, but it’s not a defense or survival tactic. It’s a necessary and useful skill for a highly socially cooperative species.
We should all encourage this trait’s development in ourselves and others. Like language, it’s complex, but that doesn’t mean it’s not inborn. If you think empathy is unusual, that’s likely because your baseline for it is really high.

I read that purses are like an extension of your body. A guy riffling through your purse then, especially if you didn’t ask, is not the right thing.

It would have been better if she had said ‘I’m not tiny because I am Asian. You’re gargantuan because you’re white. I haven’t mentioned it because I’m polite - and also not stupid, so accept variations in the gene pool.’

It’s materialistic, okay, and maybe boring, but my wedding set makes me happy. I like to look at it, and other people also notice it sometimes. Being married makes me happy. It was within our budget, but friends whose fiancé went a bit above what was strictly prudent say the same as me. It is a quiet but consistent reminder of the joy and goodness in my life.
