Nope, actually happened

I believe Sims 4 explained it pretty well. I didn't understand it before myself, but then I played as an influencer in sims and it turns out you have to have a huge popularity and build it by influencing people to have a certain lifestyle (yoga, gym, running, etc.) or use certain products (gaming, makeup, business, etc.) and then eventually as your profile gains more and more popularity and followers you get sponsored by those companies you promote (aka paid for being a living, walking ad). And if a certain company does not sponsor you, you simply never mention them. That's usually not in their interest since then the rival companies sell more of their products. They also receive products for free and do unboxing videos.
