And I totally get that - this just seems like it's criticizing guys for pursuing a girl romantically yet innocently.

Except your boyfriend should be, first and foremost, your best friend. And if you think that a relationship is the end of a friendship, then you need to rethink what being in a relationship means. My boyfriend of a year and a half is the best friend I've ever had.
I think this view is a little messed up. A guy seeing you as girlfriend material over friend material and trying to get close to you in hopes of eventually dating you isn't a downgrade - he's not just using you to get a girlfriend. He's trying to treat you right by getting to know you before he jumps into a relationship and risks eventually hurting you. He wants a real, long-term relationship.
And I hate to break it to you: doing stuff with a guy one-on-one - playing video games, watching movies, going hiking, going to concerts, listening to his problems - sends the signal that you're interested in him as more than a friend, because that's what people in relationships do.
There's nothing wrong with having a crush.
