No joke, this is what I want to do for my house when I finish college. Find some scrap, nail it together, call it a home. Use public showers and Laundromats and the like for utilities. The only problem is that I'd probably be cited for violating some city ordinance or another. And I'd want to make my own food, but I'd need utilities for that.

It's not the force, it's the vacuum. Did you properly make a seal with your hand when you hit it? And did you bring it up to your hand, or bring your hand down to it?

The Frightening Story of H. H. Holmes 13 comments

He was also quite the con man. Ran a few successful scams, and had the charisma to convince a buddy WHO KNEW HE WAS A SERIAL KILLER that it would be a good idea to let him "fake" his death and collect the insurance. He decided to kill his friend for real. Who could've seen that coming, amirite? *sarcasm* And then he got the widow to let him take care of the kids! (He killed them.)
Oh, and there's also a cool ghost story aspect to him. When he was executed, he was hanged, but his neck didn't snap, and instead he strangled to death. After his execution, the "janitor"-type guy who helped clean his murder castle, the ONE GUY who could've actually revealed the entire setup, claimed he was being haunted by his ghost and killed himself.
And then there's the fact that it's believed that his fascination with killing was a result of bullies in school mocking his fear of doctors by making him touch a skeleton.

You could stalk them through their past posts and find personal information. Then if you have enough information, you use Google to find them. Or you pose as a potential friend, contract them, and learn more about them. Or you find places like school or church and image-match with a selfie they've taken, if they've posted one. Or you find someone who knows someone who knows someone who's friends with the website's team and ask them for a favor and get the IP address from them. Or you straight-up crack the site. There's other paths, too. For example, if I track back through your posts, you're pretty good at leaving your personal info vague, so I'd probably try to find other accounts you have online and check for more info there and/or hire some Anonymous members to do the cracking for me. If I didn't mind wasting weeks obsessing over you and collaborating with people I see as internet terrorists, that is. Which I do. It all depends on what you're willing to do.

Model of how a magnetic rail gun works 5 comments
guest · 9 years ago
To a point. It basically operates on the principle of conservation of momentum. That is, the speed of the ball bearing hitting the magnet will be the speed of the ball bearing that leaves the chain. The magnets increase the speed by pulling on the ball bearings, and that's how you get up to speeds faster than you would by just flicking the ball bearing with your finger. I don't know at what point, if at all, the ball bearing would be going too fast for the magnet to really add any bonus, but adding more at least shouldn't make it slower. You'd need to upgrade to a yardstick, however.

This is a really fun kind of storytelling. I've done stuff like this before. It's too bad it doesn't have any publishable appeal, 'cause a book of short told-by-text stories would be awesome!

Step 3) tape the magnets down
Step 4) roll the free ball bearing at the first magnet. When it hits, momentum is conserved, and the ball bearing on the end of the chain is knocked free and instantly sucked to the other magnet. When it collieds, the ball bearing on the end of that chain will be knocked free, and the physics continues from there until the final ball bearing is launched off the ruler.
Step 5) Don't shoot your eye out.

Just look up "Gauss Gun." Or I can give you a reaaaaaally simple one right here.
Step 1) Get a ruler, four magnets (not quite as big as the width of the ruler), ten metal ball bearings (about as big as the magnets), and some tape.
Step 2) configure the magnets and ball bearings on the ruler like this ([]=magnet, O=ball bearing)
O []OO []OO []OO []OOO
They should be spaced so that the last ball bearing in each chain is being pulled by the other magnet, but not quite strong enough to rip it from the ball bearing it's currently magnetized to, and the last ball bearing on the end is near the edge of the ruler

Again with that "the Bible said this common everyday thing is wrong too" argument! Hasn't anyone explained yet the history of the Bible, why those rules are there, how Jesus's sacrifice caused some of them to be "done away," and basically why comparing "God said homosexuality is wrong" to "God said eating shrimp is wrong" is comparing apples and oranges? You can support equality, but please use a valid argument! Try "the intent of 'freedom of religion' is based in letting people live how they want to as long as it doesn't threaten others. You're free to believe what you want about those with non-heterosexual sexualities, but that doesn't give you the freedom to persecute them." Or "God also taught forgiveness and loving your neighbor. None of His teachings requires you to be a jerk towards sinners." Or you can go for an insult: "even if you think they're going to hell, if you decide to make their life a living hell by squashing their rights, that must make you the devil."

Russia has oil? 24 comments
guest · 9 years ago
True, but the timing kinda sent another message. It happened after American diplomats were refused by China, and right after Obama set new economic sanctions on Russia for their role in the Ukraine conflict. Basically, China said "you're not powerful anymore" and Russia said "oh cute, you're going to intimidate us a couple pennies at a time? Here's our reply: we're getting richer!"

You just described everyone ever. That's why everyone's obsessed with it. That doesn't mean it's good (I haven't read it yet, so I can't give my personal opinion), but it does explain why it's popular.

Assuming that "log" is the common logarithm (base 10) and that the angle is in radians, x=1.160501. I cheated, though, and used a graphing calculator once I got it down to -12xlog(x+1/4)=tan(x+4). Summer has blitzed my mind and I've forgotten the necessary calculus to solve this completely by hand. (I'm pretty sure calculus can solve it, at least.)

Feminists may have valid points, but until they find a way to get them across without sounding like they're ignoring or discounting all the progress and effort that men have made to change for the better, people will be angry at them. I won't deny that there are some scumbag guys out there, but to the majority who are aware of the inequalities and do what they can in their everyday lives to balance them and be conscientious, feminism can feel like a slap in the face. It's like an alcoholic who has gone to AA meetings, is following a 12-Step program, is meeting with an addictions counselor, has asked friends and his bartender to watch him and keep him on track, limited his access to alcohol, identified why he drinks and found a safe substitute for that, and is finally down to a safe amount and close to his goal of being sober being told by a stranger that "you need to do something about your drinking problem!"
