I think there was no shutdown in 2012? Perhaps you're thinking of the one in 2013?
There have been about 20 shutdowns over the last 40 years -- and this is the third one under Trump. I wonder why the 2013 one stands out.

And I just wanted to comment that hostage taking is not ok; and giving in to people who take hostages is also not ok, because it creates the precedent that hostage taking is ok.
