She begged the spirit of faces to give her a new face which meant she would get new memories. Basically becoming a 100% different person.
She did this because she poisoned Firelord Azulan and had to escape the firenation and leave her children behind. The pain of leaving them was unbearable and Ozai made it clear that if he ever saw her anywhere near Zuko, Ozai would kill him.
So she became a new person to relieve her heartbreak and resist the temptation of visiting her kids
I can go on and break this down, but I dont have enough comment space

I'm a premie baby and my lungs were underdeveloped. Because of this I super struggle to breathe when it's super cold. It's like my lungs forget that cold air is still air
