I told my teacher she did this at my year 5 parent teacher interview and I shit you not she said "do you know why I do that? Because I know you know the answer"
They actually do it intentionally, but not because they like to embarrass you (well, maybe a little, but that's not the main reason). They notice who has raised their hand, and makes a mental note of it, but they usually make a point of targeting students who don't look they're paying attention. If your teacher does this, consider yourself lucky, because this is one of the signs of a good teacher.
Agreed. They are trying to engage the entire classroom, especially the ones that look like they aren't paying attention, in hopes of getting them to pay attention. If they just wanted a fast correct answer, they could just ask the teachers pet every single time (which I've seen some teachers do)
