I believe when animals like turtles are exposed to cold they sleep.

Turtles sleep when it's cold, it's their instinct that cold= winter so they go into hibernation mode. I dunno, maybe it was an insomniac turtle or something, maybe the owner discovered the turtle's FunSubstance addiction and is making him sleep to catch up on all those lost hours.
