Actually, we refer to them as imaginary numbers because, there is no way they can exist, but they're still there, mathematically. If finding the square root of a negative number, the only way to do that is to create an "imaginary" number. All it does is indicate that the answer was a root taken by a negative number. It's not that complicated, really.
