I've never really understood it either. I think it has something to do with the coasts but it just doesn't make sense to me

The 8 stands for 8:00 eastern time and the 7 stands for 7:00 central time, hence the 'c'

7 is central time. (Middle US) and 8 is the eastern time zone. (Which is the default for most tv companies.) The east is one hour ahead of central due to Benjamin Franklin's brilliant idea.

You realize time zones had nothing ti do with ben franklin right? Time zones are a railroad company invention.

It was daylight savings times you are thinking of that were referenced by Ben Franklin- but in a satirical essay, he never thought the idea would actually be implemented. Check out snopes! http://www.snopes.com/science/daylight.asp
