Fun fact: pit bulls were once referred to as "nanny dogs" because of their gentle nature and protective personality with children.

As someone with two dachshunds I love dearly and a neighbor with a pit-mix, I can say with 100% confidence that my dogs are by far the less we'll behaved of the two. That dog is the best I think I have met, and he's the most harmless thing I know, but on his back legs he's taller than me. Between my dogs barking and his sheer size, neither of us fear much anymore.

The problems not usually will he/she hurt the baby/kid its who will he/she "protect" the kid from. Because the family is pretty unlikely to want to put a dog down for biting them, a random stranger that meant no harm and yet gets bit, IS. Not saying this is just a thing about pit bulls either, there are quite a few breeds that are usually extremely protective.
