Both countries have tried - and miserably failed - to invade Russia in the winter. The Russians have been able to protect their territory because they were more adjusted to the cold than other countries.
It wasn't just the cold. At least in Napoleon's case it was mainly the lack of supplies. The Russians would burn anything useful as they retreated making it impossible for the invaders to find any sustenance from the land. (Foraging from the land was the main way that Napoleon's army fed itself)
Except that the Russians starved out the Germans, not freeze them. After the battle of Stalingrad, the Germans had almost no Army left in Russia. The Russians surrounded them in the city and just waited, attacking them until they died.
